| The benefits of membership |
|
At its heart, SNPJ is a fraternal benefit society. And as a fraternal organization, much of our income is directed toward products and activities which benefit SNPJ members. Like all commercial insurance companies, the Slovene National Benefit Society collects premiums for its insurance coverage. But unlike commercial insurers, SNPJ redirects much of this income back to our members in the form of college scholarships, social activities, athletic competitions, cultural programs and free publications. These membership “perks” are referred to as fraternal benefits. Nearly all of these benefits are offered to SNPJ members at no cost, and our members decide how many benefits they wish to enjoy. |
SNPJ Athletic Benefits
Society-sponsored athletic activities are considered vital to SNPJ life because they contribute to healthy bodies and the development of positive mental attitudes with respect to leadership, teamwork and sportsmanship on a competitive basis. SNPJ sponsors a variety of athletic events on the local and national levels, including golf, bowling, balina and horseshoes. All athletic activities are made available through and subsidized by SNPJ. Numerous tournaments are arranged at various times throughout the year, while national tournaments are hosted in bowling (late April or early May), golf (Labor Day weekend), balina (Labor Day weekend) and horseshoes (Labor Day Weekend).

SNPJ Youth Benefits
SNPJ has long prided itself on the development and progress of its Youth Department, which was originally established as the SNPJ Juvenile Department in 1918. As members of a uniquely progressive benefit society, SNPJ leaders realized early on in the Society’s formation that the best means of continuing the promotion of SNPJ principles was through instruction and close contact with its young members — the children of Slovenian immigrants who would eventually develop into SNPJ’s leaders.
From its humble beginnings in the early 20th century, the SNPJ Youth Department has grown to become a valuable Society asset. Today, SNPJ youth members contribute to the publication of their own magazine, The Voice of Youth, and are invited to share in fraternal activities designed especially for them: Youth Roundup, a week-long summer camp for 7- to 12-year-old members; and the Teens Experience Leadership (TEL) Conference, a program that helps teenage members develop their leadership and teamwork skills. |

SNPJ Young Adult Benefits
As young SNPJ members begin to outgrow the benefits of their youth membership, they have to opportunity to maintain their contact with the Slovene National Benefit Society by participating in SNPJ Young Adult activities. In addition to receiving their own copy of the society’s newspaper, PROSVETA, all SNPJ members between the ages of 18 and 30 are also invited to attend the annual SNPJ Young Adult Conference, while young female members are encouraged to enter the Miss SNPJ Pageant. And based upon their educational desires and financial needs, young adult members are also eligible to participate in the SNPJ Scholarship Program*.
*Scholarship eligibility is based on certain criteria. Please contact the SNPJ Home Office for complete details on the SNPJ Scholarship Program. |

SNPJ Senior Benefits
While it may be true that the future of the Slovene National Benefit Society depends on the development of youth members, SNPJ has never turned its back on its senior membership, those members who have remained loyal to SNPJ for decade upon decade, through both thick and thin.
With the wisdom and guidance of our senior membership, our society has flourished for over a century. In appreciation for their years of faithful service, SNPJ offers its senior members recognition awards and a week-long summer camp program, appropriately named Senior Roundup, which is held at the SNPJ Recreation Center in the Borough of SNPJ (Lawrence County), Pa. |
