PROSVETA
From the very beginnings of SNPJ history, publications have played a leading role in the development of the Slovene National Benefit Society. In fact, SNPJ was founded on the basis of an advertisement published in an early 20th century Slovenian-American newspaper. That advertisement led 12 Slovenian immigrants to form a new fraternal benefit society, and the newspaper which ran the ad, Glas Svobode, was recognized as SNPJ’s first official publication.
The Slovene National Benefit Society was founded in April 1904 and incorporated in 1907, and beginning in 1908 SNPJ started publishing its very own newspaper, Glasilo. The Society continued to publish Glasilo until July 1, 1916, when the newspaper’s name was changed to Prosveta (the Slovenian word for “enlightenment”).
SNPJ has been publishing Prosveta for close to a century now, and although the newspaper’s frequency has changed from a daily to a weekly and now a biweekly, Prosveta continues to fulfill its mission: presenting the news of the Slovene National Benefit Society and promoting the Slovenian heritage and culture in America. SNPJ members receive Prosveta free of charge; information on non-member subscriptions is available by contacting the SNPJ Home Office at 1-800-843-7675 or e-mailing snpj@snpj.com.
