KIRTLAND, Ohio — Join America’s Polka Ambassador Tony Petkovsek as Cleveland-area SNPJ members salute his 50 years on the air with a polka Mass, dinner and dance at the SNPJ Farm Sunday, Aug. 14.
Fr. Frank Perkovich will arrive from Minnesota to celebrate with his famous musical service accompanied by the Fred Ziwich Orchestra. Members and friends of Naprej Lodge 5 will be your hosts for this special tribute to Tony.
Tony Petkovsek (604) has been a vital presence in polka music and on the Slovenian scene. He has hosted America’s longest-running daily polka show since 1961. Tony’s popular music events and polka tours brought attention to the Cleveland-style sound and all things Slovenian. Through his affiliation with Kollander Travel, he made Slovenia a travel destination. His WELW broadcasts are heard worldwide at www.247polkaheaven.com.
Fr. Frank Perkovich’s polka Mass brings a spiritual dimension to favorite polka and waltz melodies. His recordings and appearances brought the polka Mass into mainstream American culture. Fred Ziwich and his International Sound Machine will lead the service and play for the dance that will follow.
The polka Mass will begin at 1 p.m.; home-style dinners will be served starting at 2. Fred and the boys strike up the band at 3 p.m. for four hours of entertainment. The SNPJ Lodge 5 cooks will provide a full menu of Slovenian dishes, and sandwiches and beverages will be available for purchase all day. Admission to both the Mass and dance is $7.
Show your appreciation for Tony’s 50 years of community service. The SNPJ Farm is located in Kirtland, Ohio, on Heath Road, off Chardon Road (Route 6), about three miles east of Route 306. For details, contact Lodge 5 Secretary Karen Tomsic at (216) 481-1379.
