Westmoreland Federation celebrating 85 years in December

August 21, 2017 - by MARYANN BEBAR (41), Westmoreland Federation President

Much of the success of the Westmoreland Co. Federation “Pretty in Pink” fund-raiser can be attributed to Treasurer LOIS DENNING (41), pictured with her daughter ROSE DENNING (41).

YUKON, Pa. — On June 25, the Westmoreland County Federation of SNPJ Lodges held their sixth cancer fund-raiser. This annual fund-raiser for local cancer patients has been spearheaded by our own Federation treasurer, Lois Denning (41), and her committee members. Lois is a cancer survivor, as are a few other members of our Federation Lodges. We are grateful for all the work Lois has put into this fund-raiser. Many good stories have been revealed to us through Lois of how the funds we’ve raised have helped to pay rent, taxes and utilities for patients as they went through chemo or radiation.

This year our cancer fund-raiser was held at the Yukon Slovenian Hall. Thanks to all of the officers and members of Yukon Lodge 729 for their help and cooperation for this event. Many thanks as well to Carbon Lodge 223 in Greensburg, Pa., for their huge donation. We greatly appreciate the Lodge 223 officers and members who helped and supported us.

Our thanks goes out to all who donated baked goods, Chinese auction baskets and worked the fund-raiser. Not only the workers, but to all who came to the fund-raiser and supported us by attending our dance and purchased tickets for the Chinese auction and 50/50 drawing.

Jack Tady & the Tady Bears livened up the dance floor with great music and entertainment for the afternoon. We also enjoyed great food from Bubba’s Greensburg.

Before we left the Yukon Hall, we sent pink balloons with our logo into the beautiful sunset. On our way home, lo and behold, a beautiful double rainbow appeared; a sign of hope.

On Sunday, Oct. 22, the Federation will be sponsoring a dance at the Yukon Slovenian Hall from 2 to 6 p.m. Music will be provided by the Don Wojtila Band from Cleveland.

The Westmoreland County Federation is celebrating its 85th anniversary with a dance on Dec. 3 at SNPJ Lodge 87 in Herminie, Pa., from 2 to 6 p.m. The Joe Grkman Band will perform.

As we celebrate our 85th year, we’d love to see more of you folks attend our functions. We miss the Evanstown Picnic Grove, but we want to continue sponsoring dances and keep the Slovene heritage alive here in our Westmoreland County area.
